Overview
Perched atop Mount Kameyama (249 m) in Ono City, Fukui, Echizen Ono Castle overlooks a traditional castle town. The current keep was reconstructed in 1968, but the site dates back to the late 16th century. On autumn and winter mornings, sea-of-clouds conditions often cloak the town while the keep appears to float—earning the nickname “Castle in the Sky.” The surrounding samurai quarter and temples make for atmospheric walks
Access
Access
From JR Echizen-Ono Station, it’s about a 30–40 minute walk to the castle trailhead, or take the Keifuku Bus (Ono Line) to “Ono Rokken” and walk from there. By car, it’s roughly 10 minutes from the Chubu-Jukan Expressway Ono IC. For the sea-of-clouds view, head to designated viewpoints (e.g., the Kuwakake route) outside the town, and dress warmly with proper footwear
Parking
Parking
There is no large car park right below the keep. Use town parking—free municipal lots around the castle town (East Square etc.; bus spaces by reservation) and paid facilities such as Yui Station parking. Near the sea-of-clouds trailheads, please follow official guidance and use the designated commercial parking areas rather than local residential streets

Highlights
Top highlight: the “Castle in the Sky” vista when morning mist blankets the basin and only the keep rises above the clouds. From the keep, enjoy sweeping views over the Ono Basin. Down in the town, preserved samurai residences (Former Uchiyama and Tamura houses) and temple districts reward a slow stroll, completing the castle-and-castle-town experience
