Overview
Goryokaku is a star-shaped, Western-style fort in Hakodate. It played a key role in the late-Edo Hakodate War, and was designed by Ayasaburō Takeda from Ōzu in Ehime. Its distinctive bastions make it one of Japan’s most unique fortifications.

Highlights
Highlights
The panoramic star shape from Goryokaku Tower is unforgettable. In spring, roughly 1,500 cherry trees turn the moat pink. The angled stoneworks and period cannons add atmosphere, and the site is also associated with Hijikata Toshizō and the Shinsengumi.
