Overview
Overview
Fukuoka Castle, also known as Maizuru Castle, was built in the early 1600s by Kuroda Nagamasa, the first lord of the Fukuoka Domain. Although the main keep no longer stands, many remains such as the Important Cultural Property Tamon Yagura, Shiomi Yagura, and impressive stone walls are preserved. The unique structure of the large, medium, and small tenshudai (castle bases) shows the strong defensive design. Today the site is part of Maizuru Park and is especially popular during cherry blossom season
Access
Access
The castle is easily accessible by subway, with Akasaka Station to the northeast and Ohori Park Station to the northwest, both about a 10-minute walk to the grounds. From Hakata Station, take a bus for about 15 minutes and get off at 'Fukuoka Castle / Korokan' stop. From Fukuoka Airport, it takes around 20 minutes by subway
Parking
Parking
There are four paid parking lots within the castle grounds, accommodating about 450 cars in total. Fees are around 300 yen for the first two hours and 150 yen for every 30 minutes thereafter. During cherry blossom season or events, lots can fill up quickly, so public transport is often the best option
Highlights
Highlights
Highlights include the Tamon Yagura and Shiomi Yagura turrets, as well as the massive stone walls. The tenshudai foundations—large, medium, and small—form a rare defensive arrangement that divides the Honmaru into north and south. Starting from the Higashi-Omon Gate site offers a pleasant route through various ruins, ending with the Tamon Yagura. In the evenings, the castle hosts light-ups and even temporary projection mapping of a 'phantom keep,' offering a magical and unique experience of Fukuoka Castle
