Overview
Kochi Castle is a Hirayamashiro-style castle built on Otakayama Hill in Kochi City, centered in the heart of Kochi Plain. It was constructed by Yamauchi Kazutoyo in the early 1600s. Many structures such as the tenshu (main keep), honmaru palace, and Otemon Gate still remain intact. It is one of the 12 surviving original keeps in Japan, and is the only castle where all the buildings in the Honmaru compound still survive

Highlights
Highlights
One of the standout features is seeing the Otemon Gate with its ornate fittings—those “乳金物” metal ornaments you mentioned—and the feeling when the reflected shapes of the gate and tenshu become visible. The East Tamon (weapon storehouse) and the Corridor Gate are beautifully preserved. Climbing up, you get a view of the city and a glimpse of other gates and walls emerging, which gives a sense of adventure. Also, experiencing the entrance of the castle at dusk or under changing light makes it feel like you’ve stepped back in time
