Overview

Overview

Matsuyama Castle, located in the heart of Matsuyama City in Ehime Prefecture, sits atop Mount Katsuyama at 132 meters. Construction began in 1602 by Katō Yoshiaki and was later completed under the Matsudaira clan, who ruled Iyo Province for generations. It is one of Japan’s twelve surviving original castle keeps and features a complex multi-keep (renritsu-shiki) style. With its commanding position, it offers some of the best views over the city and distant mountains

Access

Access

There are several approaches to the castle, including the Kuro-mon, Furu-machi, and Kencho-ura trails. The most popular is the Shinonome trail, where visitors can ride a ropeway or chairlift nearly to the top. From JR Matsuyama Station, take a city tram to Okaido, then walk or transfer to the ropeway for a convenient ascent

Parking

Parking

Dedicated parking lots are available near the Shinonome Ropeway station, suitable for both cars and buses. As the castle sits in the city center, many municipal and private parking options are also nearby. On weekends and holidays, it’s best to arrive early to secure a spot

Highlights

Highlights

The highlight is, of course, the main keep, one of Japan’s twelve originals. Its interconnected keeps and turrets form a defensive complex unique to Matsuyama Castle. The Honmaru stretches about 300 meters north to south, with the northern bailey raised on 8-meter-high stone walls, and the tenshu itself rising even higher on an additional 4 meters of stone. Visitors often describe the scale with playful comparisons—like a shopping mall topped by a whale standing upright, waiting at a traffic light! From the keep, you can enjoy the famous haiku-inspired view, 'Matsuyama’s keep, higher than autumn skies,' overlooking the city, the Seto Inland Sea, and the Ishizuchi mountain range
