Overview
Tsuyama Castle (Kakuzan Castle) rises on Mt. Kakuzan in central Tsuyama, Okayama, and is sometimes counted among Japan’s great flatland-hill castles. Built by Mori Tadamasa over about 13 years, it once had a grand five-story keep. Although the keep is gone, the reconstructed Bitchu Yagura and extensive stone walls make the site rewarding. The grounds are also famous as a cherry-blossom spot, drawing large crowds in spring.

Highlights
Highlights
Look first for the impressive stonework around the main gate area near the Omote-Kuromon. The rebuilt Bitchu Yagura lets you sense the former castle life and domain history; its name connects to the early lord of Bitchu Matsuyama. The former keep site includes a heart-shaped “Heart Stone,” popular with couples. Defensive masugata-style entrances remain at both main and rear approaches—great details for castle fans. Each season brings a different mood, from blossoms to greenery, foliage, and snow.
