Overview

Overview

Tsuwano Castle stands on Mt. Reikizan above Tsuwano Town in Shimane, sometimes called the “Little Kyoto of San’in.” Built by the Yoshimi clan and later held by other lords into the modern era, it is celebrated for beautiful stone walls and dramatic views over the red-roofed townscape. With its elevation and misty conditions, it can feel like a “castle in the sky.”

Access

Access

Many visitors use the lift from the foot of the mountain—about 6 minutes to the outwork area—then continue on foot to the main enclosures. It’s also possible to hike up, but combining the lift and walking is a practical plan for most. Tsuwano’s compact castle town makes it easy to pair a visit with canals, shrines, and museums for a full day.

Parking

Parking

Use the parking lot near the Tsuwano Castle lift station at the foot of the mountain. Capacity is relatively generous, but peak seasons can still be busy, so arriving with some time buffer helps. After your visit, nearby hot springs are a great way to relax.

Highlights

Highlights

The best viewpoint is from Sanjukkendai, where you look down over Tsuwano’s red-tiled roofs, the steam locomotive when it runs, and the outline of Aonoyama—an unforgettable panorama. Some periods offer night illumination for an even more magical mood. The stonework around the former three-tier turret area is also impressive. It’s a castle that delivers both history and a genuine mountain-castle sense of achievement.
