Overview
Himeji Castle in Himeji, Hyogo, is Japan’s premier white‑plastered castle and one of the first Japanese sites inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage property. The elegant main keep and layered roofs earned it the nickname ‘White Heron Castle.’ While the origins go back to the 14th century, the current form was refined in the early Edo period under Ikeda Terumasa. It is also a National Treasure and is celebrated for its exceptional preservation.

The main keep is the must‑see, with steep stairs and exhibits that make the visit feel like a real ‘castle ascent.’ Night illumination is also spectacular. A recommended photo spot is the sidewalk along City Road No. 12 on the rear side, where you can capture the illuminated castle across moats and stone walls from multiple angles—though be mindful of quieter streets at night.
