Overview

Overview

Sasayama Castle in Tamba‑Sasayama, Hyogo, was built in 1609 under Tokugawa Ieyasu’s orders as a strategic stronghold after Sekigahara. The layout is associated with master planner Todo Takatora, and the construction was part of a large nationwide effort. There was no main tenshu; instead, the grand ‘Oshoin’ palace buildings were central. The Oshoin was reconstructed in 2000, and the stone walls and moats still form a beautiful, walkable castle outline.

Access

Access

By train, get off at Sasayamaguchi Station (JR Fukuchiyama Line) and take a bus to the Nikaimachi area; the castle and Oshoin are about a 5‑minute walk. By car, it’s roughly 10 minutes from the Tannan‑Sasayamaguchi IC (Maizuru‑Wakasa Expressway). The castle town is compact and easy to explore on foot with good signage.

Parking

Parking

The closest lot is the Sannomaru West Parking Area. Fees are low, though weekends can be higher. Some municipal lots in town have short free periods, which is convenient for combining a quick stop with a stroll through the castle town. Weekends and event days can be busy, so earlier arrival helps.

Highlights

Highlights

Don’t miss the reconstructed Oshoin and the impressive stone walls around the inner moat. The tenshu wasn’t built, but the tenshu‑dai (tower base) offers good views over the town and surrounding hills. If you have time, look for traces of defensive features such as ‘umadashi’ and old gates. Afternoon light often brings out the texture of the stonework beautifully for photos.
