Overview
Overview
Kannonji Castle sits on Mt. Kinugasa (about 433 m) in Omihachiman, Shiga. It was a major stronghold of the Rokkaku clan in the Sengoku period and is often counted among Japan’s great mountain castles. Vast baileys and stone walls spread across the mountain, and the steep terrain makes you feel like you are truly ‘storming’ a fortress—an intense contrast to nearby flatland sites.
Access
Access
There are several routes. A common one from the west side is via Kannon‑shoji (often read as ‘Kannonji’/‘Kuwanonji’ in guides), using the back approach. From the parking area, you climb stone steps for around 20 minutes to the temple gate, then continue on mountain paths. Public transit alone is inconvenient for a mountain castle, so a car, taxi, or rental bicycle is recommended depending on your plan.
Parking
Parking
Parking is available near the temple/trailhead area. Some lots are tied to temple visits and may require a small fee, so carrying coins helps. If you’re pairing this with Azuchi or Hachimanyama, it’s practical to use the most suitable parking for each trailhead and move between sites.
Highlights
Highlights
After passing the temple gate, long stone steps and mountain paths lead into scattered enclosures and stonework in the woods. Walking poles placed along the route help on climbs and can also clear spider webs. In warmer months, insects can be intense, so repellent is essential. Near the main enclosure, views open to Lake Biwa and the Omi Plain—an excellent reward for the effort.
