Overview

Overview

Azuchi Castle stood on Mt. Azuchi in Omihachiman, Shiga, built by Oda Nobunaga as a bold symbol of his unification ambition. The straight approach road and the huge tenshu base convey how power and spectacle were woven into castle design. The original tower—said to have had six floors above ground and one below—burned down only a few years after completion, but the stonework and foundation stones still let you imagine its scale and innovation.

Access

Access

From JR Azuchi Station, it’s about a 25‑minute walk to the trailhead. The station area has tourist info and rental bicycles, which are handy for combining nearby heritage spots. By car, it’s roughly 20 minutes from the Ryuo IC (Meishin Expressway). The route includes many stone steps and steep sections, so comfortable shoes and water are recommended.

Parking

Parking

Paid parking is available near the main approach/trailhead. You can also park around Azuchi Station or the Azuchi Castle Museum area and combine the visit with local sightseeing. Weekends and peak seasons get crowded, so arriving earlier in the day is safest.

Highlights

Highlights

The highlight is the straight ‘Otemichi’ approach—climb it and you reach the tenshu base with sweeping views over Lake Biwa and the Omi Plain. Along the way, you’ll pass Soken‑ji’s three‑storied pagoda (an Important Cultural Property), a rare structure that preserves Muromachi‑period roof forms. At sunset, the stonework glows, making the ruins feel especially dramatic.
