Overview
Overview
Gifu Castle crowns the summit of Mount Kinka in Gifu City and is closely associated with Oda Nobunaga, who made it his base for the campaign of “Tenka Fubu.” Standing high above the plain, the castle offers sweeping views in all directions. The current keep is a reconstruction; inside, exhibits introduce Nobunaga and the region’s history. With the Nagara River and Gifu Park below, the experience blends nature, hiking, and Sengoku history in one visit.
Access
Access
You can reach the summit by hiking or by ropeway. Several trails are available, including the steep “Umanose” route and the more gradual “Meiso no Komichi,” which offers pleasant scenery. From Gifu Station, buses reach the Gifu Park / History Museum area in about 15 minutes, after which you can head to the trailheads or the ropeway station. Summer climbs require careful heat preparation.
Parking
Parking
Because some nearby parking lots have limited hours, a convenient choice is the 24‑hour Kagami‑iwa Ryokuchi Parking area in Gifu Park, within walking distance of the trailheads. Other municipal parking is available but may fill up during peak tourism seasons.
Highlights
Highlights
A memorable approach is to climb the rocky Umanose trail and see the keep appear at the summit—an instant payoff after the steep ascent. Along the way, you may spot wildlife such as squirrels near scenic rock outcrops. For descent, the longer Meiso path is a good option to enjoy views at a relaxed pace. From the top, the panorama over Gifu City, the Nagara River, and surrounding mountains feels like stepping into Nobunaga’s perspective.
