Overview

Kofu Castle (also known as Maizuru Castle) sits right beside Kofu Station and is famous for its impressive stone walls and restored wooden structures. Built as a key stronghold in Kai Province, it reflects the strategic importance of controlling routes through central Japan. Today it’s an accessible castle-ruin park with strong “castle atmosphere” despite its urban setting.

Access

Access

It’s one of the easiest castle sites to reach: walk from JR Kofu Station and you’re essentially there. The park entrances are close to the station area, making it ideal for a quick visit or a longer stroll along the ramparts.

Parking

Parking

There are paid parking options around the station and near the park, but spaces can be limited at busy times. If possible, visiting by train is recommended given the excellent access.

Highlights

Highlights

Highlights include the restored Inari Yagura and the Yamanote Watari Yagura-mon gate, which help you visualize the original fortifications. From the higher points you can enjoy views of the city and surrounding mountains. The stamp spot is also a popular checkpoint for the “100 Famous Castles” journey.
