Aizuwakamatsu Castle, also called Tsuruga Castle, is a major landmark of Aizu in Fukushima. It is known for withstanding the Boshin War siege; the current keep is reconstructed and features red roof tiles reflecting the Aizu domain era.

Take a bus from JR Aizuwakamatsu Station (about 15 minutes) to the castle area, then walk a short distance. Taxis are also convenient.

Paid parking lots are available around the castle, including a convenient Sannomaru lot. During peak seasons, arriving early is recommended.

Highlights
Besides the keep, walk the outer area for photogenic views—especially around Roka Bridge with tall stone walls and turrets. The changing perspectives through gates and along moats make for a satisfying circuit.
