Overview

Tagajō was a major Nara-period administrative and military hub in northeastern Japan. Rather than a “castle” in the later sense, it’s a vast government complex site—often counted among Japan’s great historic sites.

About 10 minutes on foot from JR Kokufu-Tagajō Station. By car, it’s roughly 30 minutes from central Sendai. Pick up maps and stamp information at guidance facilities near the site.

Free parking is available near the restored South Gate (around 20 spaces). Additional parking and facilities may be available on the north side as well.

Highlights

The restored South Gate is the star attraction. Seasonal flowers near the earthen walls add beauty, and the broad grounds let you imagine the scale of ancient administration in Tōhoku. It pairs well with modern outings nearby, such as shopping and dining.
