Overview

Morioka Castle, built in the early 1600s by the Nanbu domain, is known for its impressive granite stone walls—rare in Japan. Today, the ruins form Morioka Castle Site Park in the city center.

About 15 minutes on foot from Morioka Station. Buses also stop nearby, and signage makes it easy to reach the main entrances.

There’s no dedicated parking inside the park, but many paid lots are available nearby, including municipal parking areas and lots around local museums and shrines.

Highlights

The highlight is the stonework—especially the towering walls seen from below. Walking the perimeter lets you compare different masonry styles. Night illumination (when held) offers a very different, atmospheric view.
