Overview

Overview

Ichijodani is the remarkable archaeological site of the Asakura clan, who ruled Echizen in the Sengoku period. Rather than a single keep, the appeal lies in the scale: the mountain fortress, the lord’s residence, the samurai district, the castle town remains, and historic gardens spread across the valley. Reconstructed streetscapes let you imagine daily life in a Sengoku‑era “capital.” The site was destroyed in the wars with Oda Nobunaga, but today it offers a calm, immersive experience.

Access

Access

Driving is convenient (around 30 minutes from the Maruoka area). By public transport, take the JR Etsumi‑Hoku Line from Fukui Station to Ichijodani Station; from there it’s possible to walk, but buses or taxis make the visit smoother—especially if you plan to explore widely. Allow plenty of time, as the site is extensive.

Parking

Parking

Multiple parking areas serve the different zones, including lots near the restored townscape and the Asakura residence area. From parking, you can easily cross Oyakata Bridge and enter the main heritage area. Signage is clear for first‑time visitors.

Highlights

Highlights

Top spots include the Karamon Gate, the Suwayakata garden, and the four celebrated gardens designated for their cultural value—each with a distinct style that shows the Asakura clan’s refined taste. The Karamon area is also a popular photo point for castle‑stamp visitors. If you continue toward the mountain side, you’ll find viewpoints and trail entrances, but note that safety measures such as wildlife fences may be in place; avoid overexertion in summer heat.
