Overview

Overview

Kanazawa Castle in Kanazawa, Ishikawa, was the seat of the Maeda clan, rulers of the Kaga Domain famed for its “million‑koku” wealth. The grounds are now Kanazawa Castle Park, where gates, walls, and gardens have been restored and interpreted. Highlights include Ishikawa Gate, Kahoku Gate, and the elegant Gyokuseninmaru Garden. The castle is also known for atmospheric night illuminations that give the historic architecture a completely different character after dark.

Access

Access

From Kanazawa Station it’s about a 30‑minute walk, or you can take a bus to the “Kenrokuen‑shita / Kanazawa‑jo” stop and walk a few minutes. The park has multiple entrances, and at night (during illumination periods) you can enter from gates such as Nezumitamon, Gyokuseninmaru, and Ishikawa. In summer, plan for heat and hydration if walking from the station.

Parking

Parking

There is no large dedicated parking lot inside the park, but many public and coin parking facilities are available nearby, including lots around Kenrokuen. These can fill up during busy seasons, so arriving early helps. Because major sights cluster in this area, exploring on foot or by rental bicycle can also be very convenient.

Highlights

Highlights

Expect a grand scale—broad grounds, stone walls, gates, and distinctive namako‑style walls that alternate white plaster with dark elements for both beauty and protection. Gyokuseninmaru Garden’s illumination is particularly memorable, sometimes paired with seasonal music and lighting effects. Bridges and reconstructed corridors such as Nezumitamon and Hashizume‑mon add to the sense of walking through living history, with changing scenery across the seasons.
