Overview
Overview
Kasugayama Castle is a mountain fortress in Joetsu, Niigata, famed as the base of the warlord Uesugi Kenshin. Built on Mount Kasugayama (about 180 m high), it guarded the Echigo region’s political center around present‑day Naoetsu. The castle was expanded over three generations—Uesugi Tamekage, Kenshin, and Kagekatsu—into a vast complex of enclosures. Today, the ruins are a nationally designated historic site and a rewarding place to explore where nature and history blend.
Access
Access
Driving is the most convenient option (roughly 30 minutes from the Takada Castle area). Buses run from JR Naoetsu Station as well, but plan with extra time. The trailhead is near Kasugayama Shrine; from there you hike up the mountain on well‑marked paths—more of a scenic hike than a serious climb.
Parking
Parking
A spacious free parking lot is available below Kasugayama Shrine. Use it as your base, then start the walk up the steps and trails. Wear comfortable shoes (hiking shoes are ideal), as the route includes uneven ground.

Don’t miss the views from the Honmaru: you can look out over the Naoetsu area and feel the scale of Kenshin’s stronghold. Along the way you’ll pass historic spots such as Kasugayama Shrine, Sengamon, the Naoe residence area, and the Bishamondo. Continuing deeper reveals features like the great well area and the remains associated with Uesugi Kagekatsu—especially compelling if you know the story of the “Otate no Ran.”
