Overview

Overview

Shibata Castle in Shibata City, Niigata, is a historic site best known for its reconstructed three‑story turret (often treated as a substitute keep). Its signature look is the striking contrast of black roof tiles and white namako (plaster) walls. Part of the former castle grounds is used by the Japan Ground Self‑Defense Force today, so some areas near the main turret are off‑limits, but you can still enjoy a clear view from the open plaza. In spring, the park is also enjoyed as a cherry‑blossom spot.

Access

Access

Access is easy: it’s about a 15‑minute walk from JR Shibata Station. There is a tourist information desk near the station, and signposts for the castle park make the stroll straightforward even for first‑time visitors.

Parking

Parking

If you drive, parking around Shibata City Hall and nearby public lots is convenient. Free visitor parking is sometimes available, so it’s a good idea to check local tourism information in advance. There is also space for larger vehicles such as buses on some days.

Highlights

Highlights

The highlight is the Honmaru (main bailey) scenery, including the three‑story turret, the Tatsumi turret, the front gate, and other reconstructed structures that evoke the original layout. The black‑and‑white walls are highly photogenic. During cherry‑blossom season, the combination of castle architecture and sakura is especially beautiful.
