Ueda Castle, built by Sanada Masayuki, is famed for its role in resisting Tokugawa forces. Today it’s a beloved park with striking stone walls, moats, and surviving structures, offering both history and scenery in the heart of Ueda. The legacy of the Sanada clan is strongly felt throughout the site.

Access

From JR Ueda Station, the castle park is reachable on foot in about 10–15 minutes, or by local transport. It’s an easy visit for travelers on the Hokuriku Shinkansen route.

Paid parking lots are available near the park, but they can fill during cherry blossom season and major events. Arriving early or using public transport is a good strategy.

Highlights

The standout is the surviving Nishi Yagura (West Turret). Views from the Amagafuchi area toward the turrets and walls are particularly photogenic, and seasonal highlights include night cherry blossoms and autumn colors reflected in the water. Don’t rush—Ueda rewards slow exploration.
