Overview

Hachioji Castle is a dramatic mountain castle ruin in western Tokyo, built by the Hōjō clan as a defensive stronghold. The site blends history with deep forest scenery, and its steep terrain makes you feel as if you’re truly “storming a castle.” Many structures are gone, but the layout of the residence area and mountain fortifications can still be traced on the trail.

There is parking near the site/visitor facilities, but spaces can fill on weekends and during hiking season. Arrive early if driving, and be prepared for a bit of walking and elevation gain once you start exploring the ruins.

Highlights

Highlights

Don’t miss the Goshuden (palace) ruins, where excavations reveal the former residence area, and venture onward toward the Honmaru and the Tsume-no-shiro (the far defensive point). The combination of stonework, earthworks, and mountain views makes this one of the most atmospheric castle hikes near Tokyo.
