Sakura Castle in Chiba is a representative earthwork castle from the early Edo period. Massive earthen ramparts and deep dry moats define the site, which is now maintained as Sakura Castle Park.

From Tokyo it’s about 1.5 hours. From Keisei Sakura Station, walk about 20 minutes or take a bus toward the National Museum of Japanese History.

Free parking is available around the park and museum facilities, though weekends can be busy.

The main attraction is the scale of the earthworks and dry moats, plus outworks that once strengthened the defenses. The on‑site National Museum of Japanese History is also well worth a visit.
