Overview

Hirosaki Castle in Aomori is a Tsugaru-clan castle and one of Japan’s twelve surviving keeps. The keep and several turrets and gates are Important Cultural Properties. Since 2015, major stonewall repairs have required moving the keep about 78 meters—creating a rare, temporary view during the restoration period.

About 30 minutes on foot from JR Hirosaki Station, or around 10 minutes by taxi. City buses also run to stops near the main gates of Hirosaki Park, making access easy in any season.

Several paid parking areas are available around Hirosaki Park, including lots near the city hall and the tourist information center. During peak seasons, arriving early is recommended.

The surviving keep, three turrets, and five gates are the must-sees. In spring, the Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festival is renowned for spectacular scenery reflected in the moats. Don’t miss the “moved keep” view—a once-in-a-lifetime moment during restoration.
